Let’s get this blogging thing started

Posted by lawrence89 on June 30, 2007

New blog, first post.. it always takes some time to settle in. Still, before I will introduce myself, I have to say that wordpress is an amazing project, considering that it is open source. So thanks for the opportunity to be able to review fantasy books (since that’s mainly what I will be doing in the near future) in an ‘enviroment’ like this.

So, who the hell is this “lawrence89″ guy anyway?

Well, first things first, lawrence (the 89 part was just added because the lawrence part was already taken, obviously) is a screen name I use a lot on all different kind of message boards. Most of the time, I am a big-time lurker over there, I’d be suprised if anyone even knew anything about me. I don’t mind that a bit, since it will enable me to start with the slate clean.

In real life I was named ‘Laurens’ about 18 years ago, born (and still living) in a small country called ‘the Netherlands’. I was a faily normal child growing up, with the usual innocence of a child, blissfully unaware of the ‘big world’ surrounding him. As I grew up and matured, I discovered my love for reading books, espcially the imaginative kind. Ever since I started off reading ‘the Death Gate Cycle’ and ‘the Hobbit’, I was hooked. It didn’t take me long to switch to reading fantasy in English. I have been doing that ever since, for about six years now. I’d reckon most of my peers think I am bit crazy, when they see me reading those heavy 900 page works. I am not by all means a fast reader, English is not my native language, but that does not dissuade me from reading those afor mentioned ‘epics’. Apologies in advance if anything is unclear that I write down here, I hope to improve my English writing skills along the way. Also, feedback is much appreciated.

Apart from reading, there are a couple of other things that I like to do in my spare time. I love to play tennis and working on improving my game. In that sense I am a competitor. Other favourite things include shooting some pool, hanging out with friends, listening to music (mostly alternative rock, although my taste varies from classical music to rap or trance/dance, whatever suits my mood I guess), checking out movies and writing. I do have those ambitions to get published one day, but I guess I’d better start off writing a complete novel before I start daydreaming about my own published books *rolls eyes*

I think that’s it for now, next-up is a review of Reaper’s Gale by Steven Erikson that I read recently. I hope you stick around.
