I disagree about Glen's writing being clunky. The style fits the content perfectly. I suppose the folks at Tor realized this when they decided to publish him. I also do not agree that Erikson's work is better than Cook's. They are too different to compare in such a manner. I believe Cook deserves all the praise he can get for his work, and not only for the BC books. His Dread Empire series is great and just as unique. His Garrett series is also a hoot and a precursor to the work of Jim Butcher. I just don't want people to be put off by this review. Go buy these books and decide for yourself like I did. I loved them all.

I agree with Ariel. It took a bit to get used to the style (50 - 70 pages into the first book), however it books up and carries through all 9 books. Perhaps the only series I've bothered to re-read a total of 5 times. In a way, the series is subdivided into sets of 3 books each, some characters die off, new ones join, and a few remain as old favorites throughout. Even the narrator changes multiple times throughout the series, and Cook does a great job (which is disconcerting at first) of changing the narrative style when a different character is telling the story.

The series definitely gets stronger as it goes along. I had to admit that it took me two attempts to read the opening book, but once you're used to the clipped prose style - which is actually entirely in keeping with the character of the principle narrator - then it does become much more readable.

Thanks for your comment Lawrece :o) I'd half agree with you, for a first book in the series 'The Black Company' isn't very friendly to the first time reader! The series does get better as it goes along though. 'Shadow's Linger' is worth a look and 'Soldiers Live' is perhaps Cook's best.

Cheers!

Hmmm, interesting, i've heard a lot of reviews about his book. Some rave about it--some not so. I shall read it, therefore, with a mixture of trepidation and anticipation :)
